Definition

PID on resolvoituva (toiminnallinen), kun sen avulla sekä ihmis- että konekäyttäjät voivat löytää digitaalisen objektin, sen digitaalisen representaation tai tiedon siitä, miten objekti on saatavissa. Globaalin resoluutiojärjestelmän tulisi myös tukea pääsyä PIDin ydinmetatietoihin. Jos objektia tai sen representaatiota ei ole enää saatavilla, täytyy resoluution ydinmetatietoihin (muistosivuun) olla edelleen mahdollinen.
A PID is resolvable (functional) when it allows both human and machine users to access a digital object, a digital representation, or information on how the object can be accessed. A global resolution system should also support access to Kernel information from its PID. If the object or its representation are no longer available, resolution to Kernel information (a tombstone information) must still be possible.

Vaikka PID-palveluntarjoaja vastaa yleensä resoluutiopalvelusta, PID-palveluntarjoajat, PID-managerit ja PID-omistajat ovat kaikki vastuussa tämän periaatteen toteutumisesta PIDin pitkän elinkaaren aikana.
Although PID Service Provider is responsible for the resolution service, PID Service Providers, PID Managers and PID Owners are all responsible for this principle to come true in a long lifecycle.
