Tutkimusaineistoina voidaan käyttää myös, pääosin viranomaistehtävän hoitamista varten keräämiä ja hallinnoimia tietovarantoja, tietoja ja tietokantoja, kuten rekisteri- ja tilastoaineistoja.
Esimerkiksi KOTUS:en, LUKE:n, Maanmittauslaitoksen, SYKE:n, THL:n ja Tilastokeskuksen avoimesti saatavissa olevat aineistot.

Data that are used as primary sources to support technical or scientific enquiry, research, scholarship, or artistic activity, and that are used as evidence in the research process and/or are commonly accepted in the research community as necessary to validate research findings and results. All other digital and non-digital content have the potential of becoming research data. Research data may be experimental data, observational data, operational data, third party data, public sector data, monitoring data, processed data, or repurposed data.
Information resources and databases, which are collected and managed mainly by the official governance, can also be used as research materials, e.g. registers and statistical resources.
For example, openly available data from KOTUS, LUKE, the National Land Survey of Finland, SYKE, THL and Statistics Finland.
